Recap: Plein Air Fairhope 2024
“I think I am a little too optimistic about my capabilities,” said the artist as she began to unpack at least 30 canvases, wood panels, and watercolor paper for stamping. “Better to be over-prepared and don’t forget your apron!” quipped another veteran Plein Air Fairhope artist.
At 7 am on Oct 28th, Reanna checked in the early birds while Adrienne diligently stamped hundreds of surfaces for the 60 artists participating in the “paint out”. The 6th annual “Plein Air Fairhope” paint out was beginning. Over the next five days, artists would “take it to the streets” to paint BBQ joints, Fairhope dress shops, gabled houses, and bayscapes from Point Clear to Five Rivers. You may have spotted an artist or two, set up with an easel, paints, and a bright orange “PAF” apron. From New Castle, PA to Colorado Springs, Plein Air artists traveled to Fairhope to celebrate an art form that has been practiced for over two centuries.
Originating in France, painting “en plein air” means painting “in the open air”. Artists are challenged to create an entire composition in one sitting, outdoors. Surfaces are stamped at the beginning of the exhibit to ensure that all work has been created during the event. “When you walk into a Plein Air exhibit, you feel the sun, you hear the surroundings, you sense the moment in time that has been captured. This is because Plein Air artists must use all their senses to create the work.” says co-chair Reanna Watson. “Adrienne and I are so proud to be part of Plein Air Fairhope. This event allows the community to experience the Eastern Shore through the eyes and brushes of so many artists, creating new perspectives and sensations, even for the locals!”
Hosting a Plein Air event is a city wide effort. We would like to take a moment to thank the numerous store owners and residents that were so gracious to the artists. A BIG THANK YOU goes to Westminster Village for sponsoring the exhibit and to our award sponsors: Prestwood Law Firm, The Blind Tiger, The Fairhope Store, Jubilee Suites, and the Fairhope Inn.
On exhibit through Dec 21st, stop by ESAC to view over 200 Plein Air Fairhope pieces. You may recognize a few of the houses or storefronts while discovering something new.
