Mighty Minis Painting Class Supply List – Cat Pope

  • Palette Knife – metal or plastic
  • Brushes – rounds, flats and filberts – I prefer bristle brushes, but each artist has a different preference. Bring what you enjoy using, I will have a limited selection to share as well.
  • Canvas or canvas panel – we will be using 5x7s and smaller. I recommend bringing a variety of sizes since we will be working on multiple paintings in a single session. I like 4×4, 3×3, 1×2, 2×2, etc. Michael’s has mini canvases in multiple packs.
  • Palette – glass, wooden or disposable paper palette
  • Gamsol (or) Odorless mineral spirits – get this from an art store, NOT the hardware store. (For use with oil paints)
  • Jar with lid for mineral spirits – Quart mason jars work wonderfully. (for use with oil paints)
  • Paint  –  I prefer a simplified palette of warm and cool primaries. Titanium white, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow medium or light, cadmium red medium or light, alizarin crimson, cerulean blue (hue is fine), ultramarine blue, Viridian, burnt sienna, burnt umber, yellow ochre, cadmium orange (optional), magenta (optional). Feel free to bring any colors you enjoy using. ** If you use acrylic paints, use the above colors to guide your choices.
  • Sharpie marker and a sketching pencil
  • Paper towels
  • A box of Q-tips
  • Reference photographs– preferably photos you have taken yourself. Printing small thumbnails will aid in painting small subjects. I usually print 4 to a page, or 9 to a page. Your computer settings can guide you through the formatting. If you prefer to work directly from a screen (Ipad, cell phone, etc) that is fine too.

Extra suggested items:

  • A color wheel
  • Tool cart or art box for carrying supplies
  • Palette holder – I recommend a Masterson Sta-Wet Premier Palette
