This beginner-friendly workshop introduces participants to the expressive world of encaustic painting. Students will learn the basics of working with melted beeswax and pigments, then experiment with techniques such as layering, scraping, and embedding materials. Through playful exploration and collage-based projects—where wax replaces traditional glue—participants will create richly textured surfaces and discover the freedom and versatility of this ancient medium. No prior experience is needed.

Cherie Peters is a retired art educator and professional artist whose practice centers on encaustic painting and sculpture. She holds a Master’s degree in Education and spent her career teaching and championing creative exploration in the classroom. Her work has been exhibited nationally, and she is honored to have an encaustic sculpture in the permanent collection of the Encaustic Museum of Art. Cherie completed an artist residency at Catoctin Mountain Park, where her work is now installed as part of the park’s ongoing creative initiative. Drawing on decades of experience, she teaches workshops that blend technique, experimentation, and a deep appreciation for natural materials. When not in the studio, Cherie enjoys walking with her goldendoodle Maizie Mae, searching for sea glass and driftwood, hiking in the woods, and traveling—experiences that continually inspire her artistic practice. https://linktr.ee/riseaboveartist
