Lone Palm on the Bay_Robin Popp

Title: Plein Air Boot Camp, Guerilla Warfare style

Type of Workshop: Oil

Instructor: Robin Popp

Date: November 8, 9, and 10

Time: 10:00am-4pm

Price: $375/$350 members

Guerilla warfare means “small war”. Have you ever felt that starting a painting was like facing a battle? In this three-day workshop, Robin will take the fear out of facing that blank canvas and give you an arsenal of weapons to attack it with confidence. We will use our surroundings and utilize many unconventional tools to create beautiful works of art. Robin will be teaching in oils for this class, but many of the techniques can be applied to other mediums.

Class will start with learning a limited pallet and how to mix a full range of colors that blend in harmony. Then we will discuss what makes a great composition and how to head off mistakes BEFORE the paint goes on. Robin will demonstrate how she approaches the challenge of painting outside and give lots of personalized help as each student chooses a scene, composes and paints each day. Students will go home with a color chart and a working knowledge of the limited pallet, two to four finished paintings, and lots of hand outs and extra goodies.

Plan for three days of fun and learning! (There may even be door prizes)

Bio:

Born in south Florida into a family of artists, Robin has painted since she was old enough to hold the brush. She spent a short time at Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL, and graduated as a cabinetmaker from Pinellas Technical College. Her favorite medium is oils and loves to work en plein air. She teaches painting both locally in Florida, and at John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. She and her husband reside on a farm west of Gainesville, Florida, while their three grown children live all over the world.

About the work:

Robin’s north Florida farm and surrounding area provides much of the subject matter for her landscapes in oil. Birds are another favorite subject. Crows, waterbirds, sparrows, all find their way into her paintings. Robin’s background as a woodworker also influences her works in assemblage. Her latest series of boxes combines oil paintings and found objects. As she describes, “I love the earthy feel of rust and worn wood, and the ageless quality of glass. They hold a hidden history and I give them a chance at a new life, in a new story.”

Artist Statement: “Some things cannot be said with words. The beauty of God’s creation explodes all around us, and my expression, my worship, comes in the form of painted colors across a canvas. In this hectic world, we all yearn for a place of refuge and healing. Many of my paintings are of settings that give me that sense of peace. In a quiet moment, I reach to the Creator, and rejoice, knowing that He is reachable.”
