Title: Investigating Character Design and Concept Work

Type of Workshop:  Drawing

Ages: 10 to 16

Instructor: Delaney Klutes

Date: July 27 and 28 ,2019

Time: 12:00pm – 2:30pm daily

Price: $125 ($100 members)

This workshop looks to assist in guiding a creator through their process in developing a character of their very own. Students will focus heavily on character design and creation first and foremost, but there will be no pressure to create a finished product by Sunday. Students will learn about character shapes and their connotation, character exaggeration, and character props and personality. Do not worry about coming pre-prepared with a thought-out character – we will look to other professional artists for inspiration/guidance (artists like Mike Azevedo and Karl Kopinski will be guiding lights), as well as fill the class time with student discussion and exploration. The end goal, by day two, is to have a fully fledged character in an action pose.

It is the hope that through practice, the student will find a captivating character silhouette that accurately describes the character’s personality and/or function. If they would like, the students may present said character to the class and talk with fellow students about what led to its development.

Any type of sketchbook, any type of pencil – if the student so chooses , they may also work in pen and marker (or whatever their preferred medium might be)

Greetings and hello!

My name is Delaney Klutes and I am a sophomore in Illustration at Ringling College of Art and Design. I am majoring in Illustration and minoring in Visual Development and in Business, but this summer I have different projects in mind. I want to share my learnings from Ringling with others who might want to pursue art, either for fun or maybe even as a career. Art is a route, which may seem tumultuous at first, but which can be a lucrative path to success and self-expression. Even if this isn’t your penultimate goal in life, art is an excellent outlet for stress and can assist in all facets of one’s day. I hope I get to see you in my classroom, and look forward to the fun!
