Making Glaze Work for You – Glaze Workshop

Title: Making Glaze Work for You

Type of Class: Pottery

Instructor: Maria Spies

Time: 10 am to 4 pm

Dates: Aug 8-9, 2020

Price: $225/215 members

This workshop will help one become more independent in the studio. You will better understand how to develop your own glaze palette or use those of which you have access. You will develop a practical, working knowledge of glaze
formulation. In the workshop we will discuss the different types of glazes at cone 5 and 10, such as matte, satin and glossy.

What makes a glaze opaque, transparent or blue? We will discover how glazes affect one another when overlapped or used with stains and washes over or under them. These exercises alone will create many new possibilities for your work and will help to make your work unique.

Maria will discuss the materials and tools needed to create glazes as well as the costs involved and the science behind glazing (minerals, temperatures, chemical reactions) .

The workshop exercises will include glaze tests. The glaze tests you and other students make in this workshop will serve you for years to come, even the ones you don’t care for! Be sure to keep notes as you work. Record the results of the test tiles from the kiln.
