Join nationally-known artist Michael Chesley Johnson as introduces the fundamentals of plein air painting and shows you how to paint the landscape on-location. In this workshop, you’ll start in the studio with basic principles, and then you’ll move to the field where Michael will demonstrate his method for “capturing the moment” quickly and efficiently but without sacrificing mood and magic. He’ll show you to to select a scene and create a workable thumbnail design; how to block in the start with your “best guess” at color and value; and how to make adjustments and finish. During the student painting time, Michael will go from easel to easel offering plenty of personal help and encouragement.

One of the country’s top plein air painters, Michael Chesley Johnson primarily paints outdoors in oil or pastel, choosing locations from the American Southwest, Downeast Maine and the Canadian Maritimes.  He has been invited repeatedly to national plein air events such as the  Grand Canyon National Park Celebration of Art.

Michael was awarded Master Pastellist status by Pastel Artists Canada in 2008, and he is a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society and the Pastel Society of America.  His paintings have appeared in many magazines and are in both corporate and private collections.  He was featured in The Artist’s Magazine in September 2013.

Michael is a nationally-known teacher, giving workshops across the U.S.

A frequent writer for The Artist’s Magazine, Pastel Journal, and PleinAir Magazine, he is the author of several books, including Outdoor Study to Studio: Take Your Plein Air Paintings to the Next Level and Backpacker Painting: Outdoors with Oil & Pastel.  He has many videos available, as well.

A $75 fee will be charged for all workshop refunds due to a withdrawal. Refunds will be given up to one (1) month prior to the workshop start date. Thereafter, norefunds will be given, unless the ESAC cancels the workshop.
