Title: Botanical Watercolors

Type of Class: Watercolors

Instructor: Kathy Sheppard

Time: 10 am to 4 pm

Dates: July 22 – 25, 2021

Price: $375/350 per student

In this 4 day workshop you will learn how to paint the specimen of your choice in a 6 layer technique.  We will begin by drawing your subject in detail on tracing paper and then transfer it to your watercolor paper.  Even though it may sound intense we have fun and you will be pleased with your results.

Kathy Sheppard

140 lb or 300 lb Hot Press Fabriano Watercolor Paper  (Please do not bring Arches as it does not lift easily and needs to be stretched)  If you do not have good watercolor paper contact me before workshop and you can purchase from me.  I will cut down to 1/2 sheet.

Tracing Paper (Hobby Lobby sells good tracing paper if you buy their Master Touch Premium)

Mechanical Pencil .05

Soft white eraser (I prefer Moo or Vanish Eraser)

2 clear water containers (I have cups you can use)

Wash cloth for blotting brush

Tissue (with no lotion)

Brushes #2, 4, 6 or 8 and 10  with a good point.  I use Loew-Cornelle #7020 Series (black with red band at ferrule)  I use a 2 brush technique of applying color with one brush and softening with a second brush.

Porcelain flower or slant palettes if you have them.

Professional grade watercolors

The following are Winsor Newton Colors I have on my palette:

Naples Yellow                         New Gamboge

French Ultramarine                Antwerp Blue              Cobalt Blue

Perm Alizarin Crimson            Perm Rose                   Winsor Red

Raw Sienna                              Burnt Sienna               Raw and Burnt Umber

Note:  I mix my greens and do not use tube greens.

I occasionally use Holbein Opera.  Any color from the list that you do not have, I will be willing to share.  You may have your favorite colors and can use them AS long as you don’t use tube greens.

You will be painting from a live (or cut) flower, plant or specimen of your choice.  Orchids are an excellent choice as they can remain the same.  So when picking out your subject keep in mind how long it will last.  A  Pineapple makes a wonderful subject for botanicals.  Lilies are another good choice and don’t change a lot. (But please do not bring a Stargazer or other highly fragrant flower as I have allergy reactions to them) Part of the excitement is to look for your own specimen, fall in love with it,  and can’t wait to paint it!!  It’s fun to see what your classmates have chosen!

If you can not bring anything, please contact me and I will pick something up.  I will be bringing my own flower as well.  You may want to bring your lunch or there are near- by restaurants.

Feel free to call or text me at (850) 723-2180
