Students must provide their own wood panels ( 5 to 6 – 8 x 10 or smaller) or encaustibord.

Course Description:  “This workshop will introduce you to this warm and wonderful paint and allow time for you to discover how incredibly versatile and forgiving encaustic can be.  We will start with the basics of priming appropriate substrates and fusing with heat in a safe studio environment.  You will then learn how to apply the paint along with many techniques which can enhance your encaustic paintings.  From collage, image transfers, Pan Pastels, graphite and charcoal to carving and scraping, you’ll be surprised by how many ‘wax friendly’ art materials there are!  Color mixing, compatibility with oil paint, framing and studio set-up will all be covered.  Come and find out what it is about this ancient art medium that is so alluring.”

Once a corporate training administrator, Julie has followed her passion for art and painting.  With a degree in education she has taught art professionally in the classroom and in workshops around the U.S.  

 She is a disciplined self-taught artist who continues to further her education through acclaimed workshops, art retreats, webinars, and quality studio time.  Julie has studied encaustic intensively since 2004 and is a Core Support Instructor for R&F Handmade Paints based in Kingston, NY.

She attends and has taught at the International Encaustic Conference held annually in Provincetown, MA. Her work appears in galleries and in private collections across the United States.   A native of Minneapolis, Julie resides in Fairhope, AL with her husband Will.

All materials, tools, and supplies are included in the cost of the workshop.

– Two panels will be provided for each student. Students will need to bring an additional 5 to 6 boards.  These should be raw, unprimed wood panels (like cut plywood) or Encaustibord panels (made by Ampersand) 8″ x 10″ or smaller.

– Please wear paint clothes and old shoes or bring an apron or paint shirt.

– A roll of wax paper will be useful for transporting your paintings home.

A $25 fee will be charged for all class refunds due to a withdrawal. Refunds will be given up to seven (7) days prior to class start date. Thereafter, no refunds will be given, unless the ESAC cancels the class.


A  fee reflecting 25% of the registration tuition will be charged for all workshop refunds due to a withdrawal. Refunds will be given up to one (1) month prior to the workshop start date. Thereafter, norefunds will be given, unless the ESAC cancels the workshop.
