You will need to bring:
- Your complete plein air set up (tripod/easel/Paper towels/brush cleaner basin/brush cleaner, etc).
- A variety of brushes. I use flat hog bristles or a general synthetic (like Rosemary Ivories) in the beginning stages of a painting, and will switch to softer later. At minimum, you’ll need at least one larger size flat (size 10 or 12), one smaller flat (size 2) and a few sizes in between. You will also want a rigor or brush that you are comfortable with for details (nothing tiny).
- A 9×12 or 8×10 panel
- Limited palette. This is what I use when I paint:
- Titanium white
- Yellow ochre or raw sienna
- Cad yellow light
- Quinacridone rose or similar cool red
- Ultramarine Blue
- Video Blue or Cobalt Blue (a greener blue or a viridian will work)
- Ivory Black
- I use golden calipers to “draw” my scene and will use this tool when demonstrating. I get them on Amazon for about $15 and prefer the ones with the straight legs. This is not required, but is an excellent tool for building a composition, sizing a scene onto your canvas, and checking composition relationships later in the process.
